Tech Support Anecdote [Aug. 7th, 2006|12:45 pm]
the systerhood of the geek girls

Oh, I had a great one just now! This was the complaint:

Please check out my receipts spreadsheet. It was working just fine, and now it won't let me type in new text. I have checked to make sure that I didn't accidentally hide the rows. I checked to make sure that I didn't put in an incompatible text format or formula. I have tried everything I can think of and I can't understand why the text appears in the formula bar as I type it, but won't appear in the cell.

Let me know if you can figure it out.

It took me 12 seconds to test and confirm my theory. Can you guess?

He had changed the text color to white!

The poor guy was so apologetic, but I just told him, "Hey, you gave me a great story!"

yeah it's sometimes so simple but staring you right in the face...I used to get alot of calls about that. At least he knew it was possible he had hidden the rows so he had tried to troubleshoot it himself!

Yes, I have to give the guy credit for that. It's usually the simple stuff that trips us up.

Yesterday, one of our tech support consultants was in the office checking on something for me, and someone upstairs stopped him to look at their fax/printer. They said it wasn't receiving faxes and they'd tried everything they could think of. He turned the 'auto-answer' button on and walked away. :-)
